African traditional knowledge at the heart of AFOODS' work

For centuries, cocoa, cashew and coffee have been produced in Africa and by African and black farmers. As a result, farmers have invaluable knowledge of how and in what form the raw materials they produce can be utilised.

The cocoa shells make up 20 per cent of the entire bean by weight. This valuable ‘waste product’ has several useful properties that allow it to be reused in various areas: cocoa bean shells are rich in minerals, which makes them a high-quality source of additional nutrients, cocoa bean shells even exceed the nutritional values of cocoa beans, for example in terms of vitamin B12 and fibre – they are a real superfood

Enabling the full joy of cocoa

Based on this African traditional knowledge combined with the latest modern knowledge and process technology, and in close collaboration with traditional custodians and the IFAREM institute, AFOODS Group develops new processes and recipes to maximise the use of raw materials. always suitable for human consumption, either as tea or as an edible raw material, depending on the region of origin, cultivation method and roasting process.

Through a well elaborated and smart system of co-ownership and co-governance within the Framework of the MOA Certification AFOODS Group ensures that African Traditional Knowledge becomes more widely known and is not pre-appropriated without consultation of the traditional knowledge keepers.

As a first step in its approach to processing African agricultural raw materials, AFOODS Group puts also African traditional knowledge at the heart of its work to develop innovative, upcycled food products for your wellbeing.
