The cocoa shells are leftovers from the conventional processing of the cocoa fruit into chocolate or chocolate-like products. Most of them are produced where the cocoa beans are processed after drying and export from Africa.
The cocoa shells make up 20 per cent of the entire bean by weight. This valuable ‘waste product’ has several useful properties that allow it to be reused in various areas: cocoa bean shells are rich in minerals, which makes them a high-quality source of additional nutrients, cocoa bean shells even exceed the nutritional values of cocoa beans, for example in terms of vitamin B12 and fibre – they are a real superfood
While many chocolate manufacturers use the shells as garden mulch, where they act as organic fertiliser, or simply burn these raw materials, the AFOODS Group has managed to get the best out of the shells by combining African know-how with modern processing techniques. It should be noted that although these residues are rich in nutrients, they are not always suitable for human consumption, either as tea or as an edible raw material, depending on the region of origin, cultivation method and roasting process.
Through years of research, analysis and application examples, we at AFOODS Group have gathered a huge amount of data that has enabled us to develop new processes and methods for using cocoa bean shells. Based on this knowledge, we at AFOODS Group process cocoa bean shells in a way that preserves or enhances the nutritional value of our finished products. We from AFOODS Group are very proud to be the first global brand to put a smile on consumers’ faces with both milk-free cocoa-based soft drinks and cocoa-based energy drink substitutes with caffeine and theobromine from the cocoa bean shells.
The AFOODS’ expertise on processing the cocoa bean shells also opens up possibilities of using the cocoa bean shells to make healthier chocolate.
